Tech Info Center

CMI is dedicated to furthering the state of the industry through research, innovation and the development of best-practices. Our Info Center is where we provide this information to the Configuration Management® community, and we encourage both distribution of and feedback on anything you find in this section.

First, a simple definition of CM: Software Configuration Management (SCM) establishes and maintains the integrity of software products throughout their lifecycle by systematically controlling the changes to software and its configuration, ensuring traceability of those changes, and validating the completeness of a product and its components.

Indications that you need SCM:

  • Late projects
  • Inconsistent quality of developed software
  • Lost changes to software
  • Unauthorized changes
  • Bugs that surface after release
  • High level of rework
